Bare Nanay

Motherhood | Marriage | Freelancing | Lifestyle

When asked why I babywear, initially, it was because I wanted to be hands-free. I had a gazillion chores that I wanted to finish and I just wanted to be able to multitask.

When I gave birth to my son, he was almost 4kg. We lived in a rented condo unit that was six floors up. There was no elevator. We had a stroller that we rarely use except for the roof deck which was right outside our door. It wasn't the umbrella-type and only my husband was capable of carrying six floors down. On most days, I run errands with Popy. Just the two of us. Popy, a baby bag and a bulky stroller in tow was very impossible. My CS stitch might, you know, tear.

I've known about babywearing when I was still pregnant with my son, but it was only when he was a month old that we bought a carrier. I wasn't so confident yet to carry him when he was a newborn.

Our first carrier was a hybrid wrap. Months after, my husband bought his own, and he truly enjoyed it, so much enjoyment that they were featured in Health & Home and Huffington Post Canada. I had my hybrid for 8 months, until I dropped it in a taxi on our way home.

My heart was crushed. Losing my carrier felt like losing a limb. I had so many memories with my hybrid and for a yayaless mom, it was a lifesaver. I have survived a big part of my everyday life while babywearing.

I shared my heartbreaking experience in a babywearing group, and to my surprise, there were a lot of people who offered to holiday their carriers. A friend offered to get me the same carrier that I lost. My co-breastfeeding counselors allowed me to try their woven wraps (WW), one of which, I eventually bought. But what surprised me the most was the anonymous sender of a soft-structured carrier (SSC). I found out who she was, but she preferred that I never name her. I have long given up that SSC on a random act of kindness when we were able to afford a new one. I'd forever be thankful to them because they put me back on track.

My first woven wrap was made in Ilocos. I have used this for Kangaroo Mother Care.

But babywearing was more than being able to do my chores and my errands.

Babywearing allowed me to pursue the dreams I have left behind when I became a mom.

It gave way for me to do the things I love to do.

Last year, my husband and I built Posh/Mum Maternity and Nursing from scratch. We commuted a lot (since we don't own a car) to search and purchase our raw mats. I carried Popy everywhere! Our little online venture is literally a labor of love by our family.

Me in one of Posh/Mum's dresses.

Then I re-opened this blog and accepted writing projects. Writing is and always will be my first love, but I never really made a career out of it until recently. I babywore my way through blogging events. I was always that mom with the baby. My niche is parenting, food, travel... so the events are usually child-friendly.

I won in the raffle in a blogging event.

We're able to travel with ease, too! We've reached Baguio by bus and Bohol by plane with carriers in tow.

Posing in front of the colorful houses in Pahiyas Festival, Lucban, Quezon

And aside from the business and my hobby, I also work as a marketing consultant and a social media manager. I've tried my hardest to land a regular job last year. I even got a job offer in an office set-up but the whole yaya-daycare-leave-my-son-with-the-in-laws never seemed to work. It was almost disheartening, but I was able to score two regular online jobs in Australia and  Canada, and a part-time work for a local restaurant. I'm telling you, the restaurant only required me to report in the office once a month, and I always presented my slides while babywearing.

WaHMing

My shift for Australia starts at 7 AM (Dear Lord, 6 AM when DST starts), and Popy is the kind of baby who wakes up as soon as he senses that I'm not in the room. Thank God for babywearing! I pick him up, wrap him and falls asleep almost immediately. I get a few hours of work done, uninterrupted.

All these things, I continue to do while babywearing. It has been 25 months in total.

Shadrach's Collection is also someone's dream that came true

Recently, I received a lovely wrap from Ms. Jen of Shadrach's Collection. It was as colorful as my personality! It had enough thickness and was softer than I expected. I was able to use it the same day it arrived. Thank you so much, Ms. Jen!

My lovely Rainbow Brite!

Waiting for Grab on our way to Sunday church.

My son has become very heavy. The carriers we have had started to become a bit diggy on our shoulders and lower back. It was such a perfect timing.

Shadrach's Collection was Ms. Jen's dream. A busy mom, herself, juggling businesses, family and community service, it meant that she's always on the move. She needed a way to be able to do everythign she needs to do and still keep her baby close. Her wraps and slings are handwoven locally, so she not only makes her own dreams come true, but also the local weavers'.

And Shadrach's can also help you in doing the things you want, need and love to do all while strengthening your bond with your child.

If I haven't mentioned it yet in my blog, I'm a Hotel and Restaurant graduate. Back in college, I used to compete in culinary competitions, and won the Meritorious Award for Culinary in 2009. I love cooking!

I come from a family of wonderful home cooks. My dad's the typical imbentor of viands and savory dishes, while my mom makes lovely snacks and desserts. My husband is a great cook, too, coming from a family of Oragons, spicy food and coconut milk is a staple at home. I swear, if he had taken up culinary and competed with me (because were from the same batch), he would have won.

Imagine my delight when, last September 20, I got invited by Dette of Millennial Moms PH to join them for King Sue's event at Early Night in The Fort Strip.

Luckily, my work finishes early because we recently changed our shift, so Popy and I headed out for a yummy Wednesday afternoon.

How King Sue started

I've sampled King Sue a couple of times now, and I finally got the right pronunciation! Lol!

KING SUE (pronounced as su-weh, not sway or su) was founded by Cu Un Kay who landed in Manila a hundred years ago from Fookien, China as a 12-year old boy. After working in his uncle's business and learning  how to manufacture cold cuts and ham, he started the brand after the second world war.

The specialty?

Bone-in Chinese Ham

Eighty-seven years later, King Sue continues to adapt to the Pinoy's palate by introducing a wider variety of products.

Their products include their premium Chinese Ham Bone-in (which is a Noche Buena star on your dining table), Pina Ham, Sweet Ham, Hungarian Sausage, Bacon Bits and Bacon Cubes (great for the perfect carbonara), and Sliced Bacon, to name a few.
Cucina King Sue with Camille Prats and Nathan Linsangan

Camille Prats and Nathan with Chef Katrina

The mother-and-son tandem graced King Sue's delightful afternoon with a cooking demo of food party ideas perfect for the Christmas season using King Sue products.

I, honestly, didn't realize that I can cook an entire feast with their products.

A feast made with King Sue products

Camille who recently gave birth to a lovely baby girl (she did mention she was about to pop anytime soon, and indeed, it was soon), said, "Nothing beats a home cooked meal" and mentioned that her mom's a great cook, so she tries her best to cook for her family, too. She added that her mom told her that there no more excuse  from cooking when you have your own family already.

Joining Camille and Nathan in the food demo was Chef Katrina Cua, and together they taught us how to prepare Buttermilk Scones with King Sue Bacon Jam, and my Popy's favorite, King Sue Hungarian Sausage and Potato Gratin.

My son with his own plate of food. They grow up so fast!

We loved their buffet spread so much, that my 2-year old was still asking for the food on the display after the event has ended.

King Sue Buffet! :)

King Sue at home with The Perezes

We had King Sue sliced bacon for two breakfasts already and we're still craving for more. I think our breakfast spread has been solved for the next few days, and we'll be off to the supermarket to get some more. We're having the Hungarian Sausage for tonight. :)

Payday's coming up this week, so why not include this in your grocery list?

Don't forget King Sue in your Noche Buena and Media Noche, so you can also have a feast fit for royalty!

With Mommy Mundo's Janice Villanueva

My little family arrived at SM Aura's SMX Convention Center a few minutes before the event started last September 9.

Raising Gen Z was packed with useful information. I'm thankful to Mommy Lani of Mommy Bloggers Philippines for inviting us here. Seven of the eight speakers came. Tony Meloto of Gawad Kalinga was unable to come due to an emergency. I was actually looking forward to that having known him through my years of leadership in Youth for Christ and Gawad Kalinga, and well, his talk was about raising Filipino men.

I was particularly excited about this event because while I had been called a "mommy expert" a few times, I have to admit that I get clueless at times.

Nothing will ever prepare us for parenthood, even if it's your 2nd, 3rd or 4th child, because every child is different.

Popy is now 2 years old, and our daily life together is always full of surprises. Sometimes, the surprise comes in filled with a lot of hugs, kisses and laughter. Sometimes, it's filled with tantrums, cries, kicks, and bruises or broken lips caused by my son's sudden movements (like that one instance he slammed his head on my mouth that left me bleeding).

While I'm writing this, Popy is crouching beside me, watching an educational video about colors on YouTube.

On normal days, mom guilt seeps in the cracks. I am successfully breastfeeding him for the past 26 months. We've used cloth diapers. We've fed him healthy food. We've worn him in ergonomic carriers. But as a yayaless wahm, keeping him off technology is futile, considering that I spend 12 hours working online. I'm probably not the best example to him. I give him toys and he reads his books, but on a last resort I give him my phone or my laptop, so he can watch his shows and stay quiet while I finish my work.

While there were a lot of key takeaways from the event on the advantage of using technology and digital in raising the gen z-ers, let me focus on two of my favorites:

  • Half empty... Half full...
Didi Manahan of Keys School Manila Inc.

How do you see the new generation?

Tech addicts? Self-centered? Impatient?

"Beyond stereotypes" was mentioned by Didi Manahan of Keys School Manila.

I'm sure you've heard the half empty or half full expression. I always look at things half full.

I love how the speaker said changed the view of kids nowadays being tech addicts to tech natives, because hey, they were born in this age. These social media plaforms, YouTube, computer games - these were all present the moment they were born, so it's not unlikely that they'll be so into it.

Gab and I were both amazed that some schools are already teaching robotics, to think that our first computer subject was probably in 4th or 5th grade. They don't even have floppy disks anymore!

It's praiseworthy what kids can do when we teach them how to use technology responsibly. Aside from robotics, kids can now create games, apps and websites!

Take Isabel Sieh of Girls Will Code, for example. I was already 16 when I learned C++ coding in my 4th year high school Computer class, but I never took it to another level; and here's this 13-year old girl who's even teaching public school students how to code!

Mom and daughter pair, Ronna and Isabel Sieh. Isabel founded Girls Will Code.

  • Look at your children's strengths...
Dad and daughter duo, Anthony and Hannah Pangilinan. Hannah is a YouTube Vlogger.

I didn't know the Pangilinans were great speakers. My mom knows, apparently. I've been under a rock all this time. Hahaha!

"Be generous with your praises!" Anthony said.

Now, that I'm a mommy, I've encountered a lot of moms worried that their children still do not know how to close-open, align, clap your hands, etc.

And the two things I always ask are these:

1. Do you teach them these? - Personally, I never taught my son these things on repeat, so he won't clap his hands when you just tell him to do so. He will if he's really happy. They're cute, yes. No offense meant to those who teach these actions. It's really great. But if you're a parent whose  child still doesn't do these, there is no need to feel that they are developmentally behind. There is totally nothing wrong with that.

2. But what does he already know? - Why do I ask this? Because sometimes, we're too focused on "oh, he doesn't know how to clap or align..."  that we fail to see the things that he already knows. I spoke to a mom one time. Same dilemma. She has friends and relatives asking why her baby doesn't clap her hands when they tell her to. After a bit of probing, I found out she doesn't teach this. Later on, after asking her what her son knows, she realized that her 1-year old son already knew how to brush his teeth and comb his hair.

We can try to address the areas where our children falls short, but never fall short on praising them for what they're good at.

Raising a new generation...

Apparently, I am a millennial mom raised by boomers who is raising a gen alpha. I thought my son's included in Gen Z.

I finally understood why my sister's message started with:

U raising a generation alpha kid...

She keeps up with the times with these terms, maybe because she's in advertising. :) I feel so tita already.

But a gen alpha! That sounds like a huge responsibility.

My alpha on lunch break.

This is Popy. My alpha. The one who accompanied me in every event for the past two years, including processing my MAT benefits from SSS.

Between my husband and I, I'm the one who's more relaxed in parenting. My husband's the panicky protective half.

I used to tell Gab, if Popy climbs a chair, you don't tell him no. You go behind him and support him or catch him if he makes a wrong step. Then you teach him the right way to climb and encourage him to try again.

That's me.

I see a lot of potentials in children, in general, not just mine and given the right tools and information, we have the power to hone their skills, their talents, their passions... Let's allow them to try. Let's allow them to observe, act, make a mistake and stand up again. And let us be the kind of parents who are there for them whether it's a victory or a loss.

I like the freedom. I love the trust I give him. I love that, because my Popy is from a different generation, I am able to learn something new everyday. After all, my boomer parents, I'm sure have imparted boomer parenting skills on me, too. Like every child, every parenting way is different.

Today, I have this power to raise my child to be passionate and happy and productive.

I have the power to make him a citizen of the world. :)

And I won the PLDT FamCam, too! Lucky and productive day, indeed. :)

I'm a Millennial Mom raising a Zentennial.

What a combo!

If Zentennial term is new to you, let me break it to you.

The Generation Z, also known as Centennials, Post Millennials, or iGeneration, are kids born in 2000 or later. The Gen Z population who are now in their teenage years (mine's a toddler, though), make up around 2 billion in the world. That's roughly 30 percent of the population and there are only two countries in the world that has a big population of kids in our time.

Can you guess one of them?

It's the Philippines.

Recently, in a mummy forum, I read a thread asking about our parenting style.

I'm a Millennial (Gen Y), raised by Baby Boomer parents. I'm a first-time mom, so imagine all the kasabihans, pamahiins and nakasanayans that I had to hear while I was still pregnant till now. But to be honest, there were good things back then, you know, like less junk food in the market and lesser to no gadgets at all.

Gone are the days when we were contented with those Pinoy street games or just dancing in the rain.

Early 90s: Me (reading a book) and my sister (playing the toy organ)

Early 90s: Me (on the passenger seat) with my sister (on the pedals) at Quezon Memorial Circle

Mid 90s: Me (in pink shirt) with my cousins and sister playing plastic balloon outside our QC home

Although sometimes, I'm still trying to get through motherhood and parenting, I'd like to say I'm a mixture of both. :)

The Zentennials grew up with technology. Apart from being digital natives, they process information faster and are great at multi-tasking. They're in a hurry to lead their lives by joining the workforce early or starting their own ventures. They are global thinkers who place a high value on their individuality and want to make their marl on the world now.

That being said, kids from this generation can potentially be the best, if not the greatest generation, if they are given the right opportunities to grow.

And so, to maximize these potentials, to address the challenges we may face in raising these kids and to kick-off the discussion on how we can ready ourselves in nurturing this new generation, Our Awesome Planet, the country's premiere lifestyle blog, and Mommy Mundo, the country's most active parenting resource and community, have teamed up to bring you a first of its kind conference:

Raising Gen Z: The Making of the Greatest Filipino Generation

Happening this September 9, 2017 at the SMX Convention Center in SM Aura, Taguig, this event will showcase the country's top experts, advocates, and influencers from the digital, academe, business and parenting spheres. It not only aims to make us gain a deeper understanding of Generation Z, but also hopes to provide those in the position to grow and guide these kids with tools to hone their innate skills, passions and inclinations.

According to recent studies, the Philippines is one of the top countries when it comes to social media consumption and sharing; and the vision of Raising Gen Z  is to transform the country into the social media capital of the world when it comes to content production which will bring the Filipinos' creativity and ingenuity into the global arena.

Speakers and topics lined up for this event are as follows:
  1. Parenting Generation Z by Anthony Pangilinan and Hannah Pangilinan
  2. The Spartan Program: Raising Filipino Men with Honor by Tony Meloto
  3. Nurturing Generation Z by Dr. Queena Lee-Chua
  4. Ready for Gen Z: Understanding their Psyche, Building Character & Connecting with the Zs by Chelet Tanjuatco
  5. Educating the Robotics & Minecraft Generation: What's New in School Learning Techniques by Gilbert Zamora
  6. Born Digital by Cris Tagle
  7. Are You Ready for Gen Z? by Geia Lopez
Why should you attend?

For parents, the learnings from the event will equip us with the necessary information and tools so we can parent them the proper way.

As a mom, living in this era, I have to be admit that the digital is inevitable, at least for me. I'm yayaless and I work two (or more) jobs online. I breathe digital, and at times, I am guilty of giving my child screen time as a final resort because it keeps him busy after he has grown tired of his books and toys. Attending this conference means a lot to us because we would like to take advantage of what this age has to offer in rearing him.

Work-at home mom
We try our best to stir away from gadgets. So sometimes we go visit our family farm...

or we do experiments...
or build!

But, sometimes, we're like this too.

If you're an educator, Raising Gen Z will give you proper insights on how to improve your curriculum, teaching styles or how you can set a conducive environment for your Gen Z students.

My husband and I are leaning towards putting up a daycare in a few years, so it's important for us to keep up with the changing times. After all, the future daycare will cater to even younger Zentennials.

For marketers, given that Gen Z makes up roughly 30 percent of the population, it's vital to learn more about them: how to decode their minds and understand their psyche, because they are the future market. Find out the best practices and strategies that will be useful in your marketing practice.

Bloggers and digital influencers, like myself, will gain a lot from this conference because the market and audience will soon shift from the Gen X and Millennials to the Gen Z.

Ticket prices for Raising Gen Z are:
  • Single rate - Php 1,500 per person
  • Couple rate - Php 1,200 per person
  • Group of 5 or more - Php 1,000 per person
This event is brought to you by Our Awesome Planet and Mommy Mundo. Major sponsors are Belo Baby, Sun Life Financial and PLDT Home. Special thanks to SM Aura SMX Convention Center, their official venue partner.

Check out the event page at www.facebook.com/events/703650646503238/.

See you there!

Have you ever felt this way?

Perhaps, after all the taking care of the baby and the husband, the online jobs I juggle, the house chores, the events,  and maybe even this blog, I have grown tired and weary.

And well, if you read in the image below you can see how ugly and unhappy I felt.

This was me more than a month ago:

Comments and messages came pouring in.

The top suggestions "to feel better" were, in no particular order:

1. Shopping
2. Pampering (maniped, massage, facial, etc.)
3. Coffee or mommy date

So here it is!

Luckily, I was chosen by Mummy Jay of The Momma Club to try out Derma 360's Premium Facial last August 30 in their Me & My Baby Event. The clinic prepared a day of fun and relaxation for mummies and babies at their flagship center in Rockwell.

My mind was screaming, "Yahoo! I needed this!"

Popy and I got a slot for the second session. They've prepared a play area for the kids with arts and crafts, snacks, and a loot bag that contained something for the whole family (at least, for mine because we're only three). My son enjoyed playing with the bubbles. :)

Got a gift certificate for my husband from Spectre Manila, beauty essentials and bubbles!

Dr. Joanne Bustamante - Gonzalez, M.D. discussed common skin diseases among kids, and this is a must-know since we're mummies. One of the most common, which we see in newborn babies, is the cradle cap. It's those scaly patches of dry skin that even I, as a first time mom, got worried about. I'm guilty of trying to pick it from my son's head, but apparently, it goes away on its own or you can just do regular shampooing to manage it.

Another is insect bites. My husband, most especially is so paranoid about these. The advice was to apply cold compress on the bites, instead of rubbing it with alcohol (which makes the skin dry) or applying hot compress (because it stimulates itchiness, all the more).

Dr. Joanne also stressed on the importance of making sure that the skin clinics we go to are accredited by the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS).

Here's the really good part:

Their Premium Facial! This is a combination of their basic facial plus Diamond Peel, Oxyjet Peel and Theralight.

To be honest, I haven't been to a skin clinic since that Diamond Peel last December 2013. I know what you're thinking. I told you I really need this. I lost my left eyebrow (yes, just one), three months postpartum, and had a break out because of hormonal changes. The hormones kinda stayed for a while. To top it off, my eyeglasses created marks under my eyes, as you can see on the photo below.

I forgot to take a photo of the "after", but my skin definitely felt softer and smoother. Now, I'm just trying to convince my husband to make this a monthly thing. Haha!
