Raising Gen Z: Are you ready?

by - 1:35 PM

I'm a Millennial Mom raising a Zentennial.

What a combo!

If Zentennial term is new to you, let me break it to you.

The Generation Z, also known as Centennials, Post Millennials, or iGeneration, are kids born in 2000 or later. The Gen Z population who are now in their teenage years (mine's a toddler, though), make up around 2 billion in the world. That's roughly 30 percent of the population and there are only two countries in the world that has a big population of kids in our time.

Can you guess one of them?

It's the Philippines.

Recently, in a mummy forum, I read a thread asking about our parenting style.

I'm a Millennial (Gen Y), raised by Baby Boomer parents. I'm a first-time mom, so imagine all the kasabihans, pamahiins and nakasanayans that I had to hear while I was still pregnant till now. But to be honest, there were good things back then, you know, like less junk food in the market and lesser to no gadgets at all.

Gone are the days when we were contented with those Pinoy street games or just dancing in the rain.

Early 90s: Me (reading a book) and my sister (playing the toy organ)

Early 90s: Me (on the passenger seat) with my sister (on the pedals) at Quezon Memorial Circle

Mid 90s: Me (in pink shirt) with my cousins and sister playing plastic balloon outside our QC home

Although sometimes, I'm still trying to get through motherhood and parenting, I'd like to say I'm a mixture of both. :)

The Zentennials grew up with technology. Apart from being digital natives, they process information faster and are great at multi-tasking. They're in a hurry to lead their lives by joining the workforce early or starting their own ventures. They are global thinkers who place a high value on their individuality and want to make their marl on the world now.

That being said, kids from this generation can potentially be the best, if not the greatest generation, if they are given the right opportunities to grow.

And so, to maximize these potentials, to address the challenges we may face in raising these kids and to kick-off the discussion on how we can ready ourselves in nurturing this new generation, Our Awesome Planet, the country's premiere lifestyle blog, and Mommy Mundo, the country's most active parenting resource and community, have teamed up to bring you a first of its kind conference:

Raising Gen Z: The Making of the Greatest Filipino Generation

Happening this September 9, 2017 at the SMX Convention Center in SM Aura, Taguig, this event will showcase the country's top experts, advocates, and influencers from the digital, academe, business and parenting spheres. It not only aims to make us gain a deeper understanding of Generation Z, but also hopes to provide those in the position to grow and guide these kids with tools to hone their innate skills, passions and inclinations.

According to recent studies, the Philippines is one of the top countries when it comes to social media consumption and sharing; and the vision of Raising Gen Z  is to transform the country into the social media capital of the world when it comes to content production which will bring the Filipinos' creativity and ingenuity into the global arena.

Speakers and topics lined up for this event are as follows:
  1. Parenting Generation Z by Anthony Pangilinan and Hannah Pangilinan
  2. The Spartan Program: Raising Filipino Men with Honor by Tony Meloto

Why should you attend?

For parents, the learnings from the event will equip us with the necessary information and tools so we can parent them the proper way.

As a mom, living in this era, I have to be admit that the digital is inevitable, at least for me. I'm yayaless and I work two (or more) jobs online. I breathe digital, and at times, I am guilty of giving my child screen time as a final resort because it keeps him busy after he has grown tired of his books and toys. Attending this conference means a lot to us because we would like to take advantage of what this age has to offer in rearing him.

Work-at home mom
We try our best to stir away from gadgets. So sometimes we go visit our family farm...

or we do experiments...
or build!

But, sometimes, we're like this too.

If you're an educator, Raising Gen Z will give you proper insights on how to improve your curriculum, teaching styles or how you can set a conducive environment for your Gen Z students.

My husband and I are leaning towards putting up a daycare in a few years, so it's important for us to keep up with the changing times. After all, the future daycare will cater to even younger Zentennials.

For marketers, given that Gen Z makes up roughly 30 percent of the population, it's vital to learn more about them: how to decode their minds and understand their psyche, because they are the future market. Find out the best practices and strategies that will be useful in your marketing practice.

Bloggers and digital influencers, like myself, will gain a lot from this conference because the market and audience will soon shift from the Gen X and Millennials to the Gen Z.

Ticket prices for Raising Gen Z are:
  • Single rate - Php 1,500 per person
  • Couple rate - Php 1,200 per person
  • Group of 5 or more - Php 1,000 per person
